Often times we find ourselves going through the motions, waking up, going to school, going home, repeat. When we fall into these routines and continue to drag on, we tend to lose perspective on the things that make every day unique and wonderful. It’s the little things in life that give us individuality, purpose, and happiness. Taking the time to appreciate these many amazing things is the key to making it through school, sports, and life happier.
These little things are different for everyone and vary in rarity too. Sometimes it’s sleeping in on the weekend, seeing friends, or just listening to music while you practice a hobby. They could include writing a poem in the morning sun, watching the stars and listening to silence, staying up late enjoying the intoxications of youth. Others could be indulging in sweets during football season, an ice bath to soothe sore muscles after a long practice, or reading a book while watching ESPN. The little things in life highlight who you are and are often taken advantage of while we all linger in the space between childhood wonderland and adult reality. Seizing these things while you have time is essential to happiness throughout life.
The hard part of life is being a spectator, even though it presents the illusion of ease. This is evident by what comes after watching your life go by. Even though you were there the whole time, you never enjoyed it. Even the smallest things, like a Monday off from school, can be an opportunity to grasp the bliss of participating in your life. By enjoying all the little things, it helps make the big things even greater because it surrounds the big things with enough other significant, yet overlooked things, to fill your life with joy.
