Don’t judge a book by its cover is a saying we’ve all heard at some point in our lives, although it’s something I’m sure everyone has done at least once.
Everyone makes some kind of judgment at least once a day, whether it’s big or small. Nowadays it has become very common to judge first and get answers later.
Though it’s common now, what people don’t realize is that it is very hurtful to those people who are judged. Sometimes what we say can be more harmful to people than if we use violence.
In our society we’ve learned to judge people because of their outward appearance, like whether they have designer clothes or cool shoes. That’s why people are so hard to get to know; a lot of people are afraid of being judged.
This causes people to become deeply insecure and constantly judge whether or not they are cool enough or if they look good. Thanks to all the media out there, we have a set “image” that people strive to achieve, and if you’re not there, then you’re different.
Some people will change who they are so that they can become like that specific “image” and by doing that they think that they won’t be judged. So instead of being themselves, they become someone entirely different.
This makes people afraid to express who they really are because of the fear of being judged. So, what does that say about people today? Why have we become so judgmental and hurtful toward other people?
I think it’s just that because we are all afraid of being judged deep down and that keeps us from being ourselves. It’s never easy when you know that someone is judging you, but you have to keep in mind that these people judge you because they are mad at themselves.
So the next time you make a judgment, remember that you can have a bigger effect on person than you think.
As Euripides once said, “Judge a tree from its fruit, not from its leaves”.
