There have been many new trends in the social media world. Gangnam style, twerking, and Harlem Shake have been huge hits. We welcome a new one: gallon smashing.
For those who do not know what gallon smashing is, it’s where you go to a grocery store or gas station and get a gallon of milk or orange juice (or whatever liquid you want) and just walk with it behind someone – make sure they aren’t watching – and act like you tripped and smash the gallons together or throw them into the air. When you’re trying to get up, actually slip in the liquid and fall continuously, while friends are nearby recording the whole incident.
Some people have pondered how this came about. A group of teens just went to the store one night and started smashing gallons; they recorded their adventures and uploaded it to YouTube, and it then went viral.
Many teens are into this new craze. The twittersphere has been buzzing about gallon smashing. Many want to go do it or have done it. There is a gallon smashing twitter account where people go gallon smash and send in their videos.
Some people may think it’s all fun and games with no consequences, but that’s not the case at all. Police involvement is very possible; gallon smashing is a crime. There have been numerous incidents and arrests all over the country, and it can become very dangerous. Not only is the teen putting himself/herself at risk of injury, they are also putting other shoppers or innocent people coming to their rescue at risk of falling and injury. Not to mention the mess that can occur and the other products within the store that can become damaged. Kids might think this is just a prank, but they do not realize they are not only committing theft but also destroying other people’s property.
