Over a month ago the East Coast and some Caribbean countries were hit by a powerful hurricane called Sandy. This hurricane caused massive destruction and changed the lives of hundreds of people.
Hurricane Sandy left hundreds of people homeless and even more without power, causing mass transit to shut down because of all the damage. The flooding caused extreme damage to homes, workplaces, amusement parks, etc.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Sandy’s kinetic energy for a storm surge and destruction potential reached a 5.8 on a scale of 0 to 6. It’s one of the highest measured.
Adding to the destruction, Sandy killed many people. Over 100 people were killed in the United States alone and at least 70 people in the Caribbean countries where it hit first.
Though Hurricane Sandy has caused a lot of damage and destruction, there are people who have stepped up to help those affected by the hurricane. Many companies and organizations have donated everything from money to personal hygiene items. Others have contributed medical assistance, animal aid, and counseling, even volunteer work and repairs.
