This year’s JHS senior class consists of 207 students, and out of that group eighteen students opted to graduate a semester earlier than the rest.
Those eighteen students had to have at least 24 credits and take a semester of a senior English course online or take a semester of the Composition 148 course. They also had to have taken the required classes to graduate such as Health, P.E., Consumer Ed, etc.
Many students who graduated early are now either working or taking college classes at a community college. Early grad Katie Hackett said, “I’m taking classes at Lincoln Land Community College to get some gen eds out of the way before I go to Mizzou in the fall.”
Hackett plans to major in communications and minor in business at the University of Missouri and then get a job that focuses on public relations after graduating from Mizzou. Another early grad, Evan Crow, plans to join the Air Force in the near future.
Both Hackett and Crow seem to know exactly what they want in the future. Both also say that it feels good to not have to wake up every morning and go to high school, but they do miss some things about JHS.
Crow said, “I miss seeing my friends every day at school but other than that I don’t really miss it that much.”
Hackett said, “I miss seeing my freshman advisory every day. I still see my friends on the weekends.”
The early grad’s very last day of high school was on January 7 for those who still had to take a final due to a snow day; however, December 20 was the last day for most. These students are still welcomed back to walk across the stage and accept their high school diploma with the rest of their class on May 24.
As of May 24, JHS will be saying goodbye to about 200 more students and they will be joining the early grads in their journey to what lies ahead. We wish these early grads the best of luck in the future!
