Since 1944, the Golden Globes Awards ceremony has been held annually in Beverly Hills, California. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association hands out awards for excellence in American and international film and television. Those who win a Golden Globe receive a statuette trophy called the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The name of the trophy comes from producer and director, Cecil B. DeMille, the first entertainment industry figure to win a Golden Globe. The Golden Globes is the third most watched Academy Awards show, following the Grammys and Oscars. All money generated from this ceremony is given to entertainment-related charities, like the Young Artist Foundation that provides resources and scholarships for those who are physically or financially challenged.

Meryl Streep currently holds the record for the most Golden Globe awards with a total of eight Golden Globes and one Cecil B. DeMille Award. The ceremony is normally held in January, but because of the pandemic, the 78th Golden Globes ceremony was delayed until February 28, virtually honoring the best in 2020 film and television.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the hosts of the 2021 ceremony. Schitt’s Creek was awarded the Best Musical or Comedy Television Series, and Catherine O’Hara was awarded the Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy Television Series for her role in Schitt’s Creek. Soul got Best Animated Motion Picture, Minari was the Best Foreign Language Motion Picture, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was the Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, the Best Drama Motion Picture was Nomadland, Andra Day won Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for The United States v. Billie Holiday, and Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television was awarded to Mark Ruffalo for I Know This Much Is True and Anya Taylor-Joy for The Queen’s Gambit.

In addition to recognizing the best in film and television for 2020, Jane Fonda was recognized with the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Norman Lear with the Carol Burnett Award for their contributions. Chloé Zhao became the first Asian woman to win a Golden Globe for best director, for the show Nomadland. Before Chadwick Boseman lost his battle to cancer, he was involved in the drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He received an award for the Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf and gave an emotional speech thanking the HFPA for the award and expressing how important it is to celebrate those we love.

As of now, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t know what next year’s ceremony will be like, if it will be virtual like this year or if people will be able to accept their awards and give their speeches in person, but they remain hopeful for the latter.
