PARCC testing at JHS

Olivia Lee, staff writer

PARCC stands for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.  This is a “modern assessment” that could have the potential to replace previous state standardized tests.  PARCC also strives to provide a more accurate set of information for both teachers and parents to better recognize where a specific student needs help in a certain subject and improve plans to meet this student’s needs.  With this in mind, Jacksonville High School has taken a step towards further preparing its students by providing PARCC testing in select classes for several years now.  These include junior English classes (including AP Language) and math classes.  PARCC testing at JHS this year will take place in the media center over the span of two weeks.  From Tuesday, April 5 to Friday, April 15, the media center will be closed throughout the day due to PARCC testing.  Pay attention to the daily announcements about Media Center accessibility during this time.

Although PARCC testing does not currently affect the college admission process, it is predicted that PARCC could potentially affect this process for high school students down the road due to its new expectations and standards.  PARCC is also a great way for students to test their knowledge and test taking skills, two very important factors for students wishing to continue to further their education after high school.  Overall, according to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, “The PARCC test helps ensure that all students, regardless of income, family background, or geography, have equal access to a world-class education that will prepare them for success…”
