The corniest play this side of the Mississippi

If you had the chance to make it down to the Jacksonville High School Auditorium this past weekend and watch the school play, “Cornfield of Dreams,” then you are a lucky duck. The play was comical, dramatic, and interactive. With puns up to their ears, the cast enjoyed their corny script and played their parts excellently.  Not only were the puns prominent, there were almost too many of them to count.

Personally, the emcees, Genna Fanning and Jessica Olsen, were my favorite. Their comments added just the right amount of entertainment to glue the whole performance together. In this play, there was no such thing as a fourth wall to our emcees. From pointing out every single possible pun in annoyance and having the audience groan along with them to yelling at the actors to keep them in line to storming off and joining the audience on multiple occasions and lastly throwing popcorn everywhere, the emcees changed the performance from a play the audience watches to a play the audience experienced.

However, one cannot forget about the fantastic actors as well. From spot on southern accents to genuine concern and humor they truly brought the story to life. Each set of characters from Little Sweet Pea’s family to the orphans and their matron to Major Max Major embodied their characters to the highest degree of ability. They delivered their puns, I mean their lines, with expert ability. The names of the characters were also quite laughable: General General, Miner Miner, Rhoda Hoarse, and Dee Sember. They were the perfect topping to an already comical, although corny, play.

While this play might not have been everyone’s cup of tea, avid pun enthusiasts, or anyone just looking for a laugh, would have greatly enjoyed themselves. Overall it truly was “the corniest play this side of the Mississippi.”
