Aquamarine is the birthstone of March. This stone has been called the stone of the seas because of its name “Aqua” meaning water and “mare” meaning sea.
Like the other stones, Aquamarine has a beauty all its own, and like the others, it has been used for different purposes throughout history.
It was believed that soldiers that wore the aquamarine into battle would become invincible; it was also believed that this stone could bring happiness to anyone who wore it. The stone was also given to enemies so that they could put aside their differences and be friends again.
Many legends have been attributed to this stone but there is one legend that is more common than others. The Romans believed that the aquamarine was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea.
The stone was believed to have fallen out of the treasure box of sirens and washed up on shore. As a result, sailors would wear the stone sculpted to look like Neptune around their necks to guard them from the dangers of the seas.
This caused people to believe that the stone was even more powerful when it was submerged. Many would use the aquamarine to cure illness of the heart, liver, stomach, and throat.
Aside from helping illnesses, ancient fortune tellers would use the aquamarine to tell people their fortunes. It would also be used for curing poisons of all kinds.
Throughout history this stone has been used to help others in need, those born in this month should be proud of the beautiful aquamarine.
