Ram take Goff, weapons

The Los Angeles Rams had one need heading into the 2016 NFL Draft.  That need was to find some players to revive the desperate offense the team boasted last season and put points on the board.  General Manager Les Snead and Head Coach Jeff Fisher used five of the team’s six picks on playmakers on the offensive side of the ball.  With the first pick in the draft, acquired via trade with the Tennessee Titans, Los  Angeles selected their quarterback of the future in California’s Jared Goff.  Goff will hopefully cement himself as an above average starting quarterback soon as that has been a need since Marc Bulger, who made the Pro-Bowl in 2004 and 2006, was the signal caller for the Rams.

LA  didn’t pick again until the 4th round where they owned two picks.  First they selected tight end Tyler Higbee from Western Kentucky.  This skilled pass-catcher comes with off-field issues but presents multiple opportunities to create mismatches and catch passes from Goff.  Next, they took Pharoh Cooper, a wide receiver from South Carolina.  Cooper is a lot like current Ram Tavon Austin as he is very dynamic with the ball in his hands.  He needs to develop as a receiver but has the potential to become a viable option for the offense.

The Rams, thanks to another trade, acquired three sixth-round picks.  First, they added another tight end Temarrick Hemingway from South Carolina State.  He is a physical specimen, posting great numbers at the combine. He is very raw, but the upside is through the roof. They then took the only defensive player, Josh Forrest, a linebacker from Kentucky.  Forrest is limited athletically but has a chance as a gap-shooter behind a very solid defensive line.  Lastly, the Rams took receiver Michael Thomas from Southern Miss.  Thomas is a long, fast, athletic, sure-handed wide-out whom I believe is way more than your typical sixth-round selection.

Los Angeles needed to address the offense and did so.  If Goff turns out to be good, it’s a great draft, but if Goff struggles and isn’t the answer, the Rams missed up big time.
