National Championship: Wildcats win a wild one

North Carolina and Villanova were two of the best teams to take the court during the regular season, and it was only fitting that the two squared off in the National Title Game.  What a game it was.

Both teams traded blows early.  Joel Berry II of UNC and Ryan Arcidiancono of Villanova hit threes early to get the scoring started.  Villanova rode their hot shooting start to a 17-12 lead with eleven minutes to go in the first half.  The Tar Heels came roaring back thanks to Joel Berry.  Berry scored 15 points in the first half as UNC went into the break with a five-point lead.

Villanova took over early in the second half.  The Wildcats fought back to tie the game at 44. They then took off with the lead and essentially the game.  Villanova led UNC by ten points with five and a half minutes to play.  The Tar Heels were not about to give up on their National Title hopes that easily and battled back.  Joel Berry and Marcus Paige hit threes to pull Carolina closer to the Wildcats.  Villanova still held a three-point lead with thirteen seconds to go.  These last few seconds will be forever remembered as thirteen of the best seconds ever in college basketball.  Senior guard Marcus Paige nailed a double-pump three-pointer from way behind the arc to tie the game at 74 with four ticks to go.  Overtime seemed on the horizon and Marcus Paige was the hero.  Kris Jenkins, however, decided to make the watching world forget about Paige’s shot.  Villanova had to go the length of the court in four seconds to get a shot off.  Arcidiacono pushed the ball up and flipped a pass behind him to Jenkins who was trailing the play.  Jenkins caught the ball and released as the time expired.  Nothing but net.  Kris Jenkins and the Villanova Wildcats are your 2016 National Champions.

Marcus Paige scored a game-high 21 points in his last game as a Tar Heel.  Joel Berry II added 20, and Brice Johnson had 14 of his own.  Phil Booth led the way for Villanova.  He came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points.  Ryan Arcidiacono, who was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, scored 16, while hero Kris Jenkins and Josh Hart added 14 and 12 respectively.
