The University of Virginia was looking to advance to their first regional final since 1995. First however, they would have to defeat the Iowa State Cyclones, who would end UA-Little Rock’s Cinderella bid with a 78-61 victory in the second round. That was no easy task for the Cavaliers. The winner would end up playing “underdog” Syracuse in the regional finals.

This game would seem like a blowout at first but would be uncharacteristically closer at the end. Virginia opened the first five minutes of the game on a 12-2 run. Over the course of the first half, Virginia would get a big lead, up 31-15 at one point, then Iowa State scored some to catch up. Iowa State would finally get close with a minute left in the half when they would bring the score to 45-31, which was the score at halftime. Throughout the second half, Iowa State would get closer but would never come closer than eight points. Virginia would end up taking this game by thirteen. They will be facing Syracuse in the Elite Eight. The Cavaliers are looking to reach their First Final four since 1984.
