Repeatedly, when the Miami Hurricanes would call a timeout, fans could hear Hurricanes player Sheldon McClellan shout, “We are NOT losing this game!” The Wichita State Shockers look to upset the Miami Hurricanes, two days after they upset the Arizona Wildcats, and four days since they defeated Vanderbilt in the First Four games. However, that did not come to fruition.

Miami jumped out to an early lead and kept it for most of the half. Miami went into the break leading big, 32-19. The Shockers came out firing in the second half. They managed to erase the 13-point deficit thanks to a 22-4 run and go up in the contest. Miami head coach Jim Larranaga got called for a technical foul after Shocker player Shaquille Morris slammed one down after a steal. This was Larranaga’s second technical foul in five years as a coach. The “T” gave Miami new life though, as after the technical, Miami surged back and eventually led 55-51 with three minutes left. The Hurricanes never looked back. Miami defeated the Shockers 65-57.

The Shockers were led by seniors Fred VanFleet and Ron Baker, who were instrumental in Wichita State’s run to the Final Four in 2013, and teammate Shaquille Morris. Both have the potential to be taken as relatively high draft picks in the upcoming NBA draft. VanFleet and Morris both had 12 points while Baker had 11 in the losing effort.

The Hurricanes were led by two seniors as well, Sheldon McClellan and Angel Rodriguez. Rodriguez led the team in points with 28; McClellan was second with 18.

Miami will move on to play the winner of Villanova and Iowa in the Sweet 16.
