When I asked my friend what his plans were for Valentine’s Day, he told me this year was his first year ever being single on Valentine’s Day and he was pretty bummed. Valentine’s Day – or Single Awareness Day as many choose to refer to it – is the worst day of the year to be single. Instead of moping around and crying all day, singles everywhere can celebrate being alone and not shell out hundreds of dollars for one day. If you’re not sure how to celebrate, here are some ideas:
- Shower yourself with loving gifts.
Spoil yourself by buying that huge teddy bear you wish someone bought for you or consume an entire box of Russell Stover chocolates. Write a loving note to yourself or stand in front of the mirror and point out everything that is great about you! After all, the most important relationship we can ever have is the one that we have with ourselves, so be sure to give yourself some love!
- Seek out new love!
Attend a Single’s party or even a Valentine’s party and meet some other lonely people. You already have something in common and you might just hit it off!
- Keep yourself busy.
Treat yourself to a relaxing spa visit, a manicure, or be a tourist in your own city. Afterwards, go on with your day by cleaning out your closet or finish that homework you’ve procrastinated.
- Veg out!
Stay in your pajamas all day and only leave the couch for the refrigerator. Sometimes, there is no better way to be alone than flipping through Netflix and ordering Chinese takeout with your feet propped up on the coffee table.
- Share love with someone else!
Help out at your local soup kitchen or make some delicious cupcakes for your co-workers. Whatever you do, it’s always good to help the community and what better way is there to celebrate love than helping those in need or showing your appreciation for your peers?
Even if you decide not to partake in the above activities, don’t let being single on a retail holiday get you down. Valentine’s Day will be over as soon as it started.
