Around this time of year, pink, red, and purple are everywhere. People desperately look for someone to share February 14 with, and when they do, you better believe that social media will fill you in on their newfound love. Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a day where people celebrate the relationship they have with their boyfriend or girlfriend, but for those who do not have a relationship, this day marks one of the most depressing days of the year.
I admit, I have spent a couple Valentine’s Days with my significant other at the time, but that does not simmer the hatred that I have for the “holiday.” There are many reasons that I, and thousands of other people, feel this way. February 14th is just another day of the year that puts pressure on relationships, whether it be for the perfect gift, surprise dinner, and flawless treatment from someone’s boyfriend or girlfriend. Nowadays, relationships are built and broken because of the pressure that television shows, movies, and social media put onto the image of a good boyfriend or girlfriend, and people still wonder why relationships that last are so rare. For those who do not have a relationship to put pressure on when this day rolls around, one can assume it is pretty depressing to see so many couples out and about and to see pictures of people’s gifts and events on Valentine’s Day. Unless everything goes perfectly, Valentine’s Day can easily be a bad day for anyone celebrating, relationship or not.
As the day approaches, I am curious if the bad reputation the day has will be broken by my plans for the day, but only time will tell for me and everyone else that is wondering how the day will go. Some may find or make their love stronger, but some may not be so lucky.
