As the holiday season nears, the globe flurries, rushing to find the perfect presents, preparing for family and friends, waiting for the first heavy blanket of snow. Excitement fills all the cracks of the exhausted masses everywhere, just as it should.
The culmination of yet another year is just around the corner, and with that comes a new and bright chapter of our lives. Full of opportunity and unexpected obstacles, 2015 will hold some of the most difficult challenges that we have yet to face, but in addition, we can look forward to all the good that will arise in the coming months. Although 2014 coming to an end could mean the end of an era, the raw potential that just a change of mind could have is incredible.
Usually I tend to look at the brighter side of things, but as the world is busy planning for a fresh start, I myself may not be fully ready to embrace the meaning of a new year. I do not like change, especially when it promises plenty of stress and discomfort. After all, many prospects for me and my classmates are to be made this year: applying for college, getting hired for part-time jobs, keeping grades up, staying up to date on extracurricular activities, maintaining healthy and happy relationships with family and friends, and even goals as simple as keeping your room clean… The list is endless.
It’s quite intimidating when you look at a year’s worth of expectations in one simple list, primarily when you’re the one that has to fulfill all those requirements. Time cannot be stopped and that in itself is terrifying in my opinion. Even if you aren’t ready to handle those issues, the world doesn’t wait for you. It moves on, looking for someone who can handle the weight of the hardships.
Because of this, we must learn to move on ourselves. We must persist and accomplish what needs to be done ourselves, much like we have every year.
My New Years’ resolution is to take things day by day, to spend my time doing what really matters to me. What’s yours?
