The 2013 JHS prom will be held on Saturday, May 11, at Hamilton’s in downtown Jacksonville. The dance starts at 8 and will go until 11.
Some people are skeptical if prom is worth all the time and money that goes into it. The estimated average amount of money spent on prom per family in 2013 is over $1,100. Boys especially often ask the question, “Why would someone spend all that money for one night?”
Prom is an event that only comes around a few times in a lifetime. For high school students, it is a rite of passage and an end-of-the-year celebration. What better way to kick off the end of senior year than with a night out with your best friends?
For girls, prom is mostly about sentimentality. It is a night that will be with you for the rest of your life, a night that you can look back at years down the road and remember all of the fun times you had.
That’s something that most guys don’t understand. Guys would rather have fun by spending time with friends, but not necessarily at prom. Senior Austin Hunter said, “I look forward to being with my friends after prom more than I do going to prom itself.”
Even though the average family will spend over $1,100 on prom this year, there are ways to spend less while still having an extravagant prom. The dress is normally the biggest expense, but by choosing the right shops and looking at what each store has to offer, it is possible to find the perfect dress for a bargain price. Shoes, another prom necessity, can be worn multiple times as long as they match the dress. Some flower shops, in particular Barber Florist on North Main in Jacksonville, offer a corsage and boutonniere package for $26.50 total, and they do a fantastic job matching flowers to dresses.
While some people, boys in particular, think prom costs too much for what it is, the fact is that it is a memory. Memories can’t be bought.
Besides, nothing looks better than a boy in a tux.
