Shooting startles U of I

During the weekend of Saturday, September 25, chaos arose from the streets of the University of Illinois campus as a shooting occurred late that night around 12:38 am.  One person was killed in the shooting and four people were left with injuries.  The shooting took place as a hit-and-run type of situation on East Green Street, one of U of I’s busiest spots on campus. It is believed that the incident stemmed from an argument taken place at a nearby party and escalated to the streets where the shots were fired leaving everyone in distress. The victims of the shooting were taken into hospital care immediately where one, George Korchev, was pronounced dead. These victims were not involved in the original argument but happened to be walking in the same area during the time of the shooting.

Less than a half an hour later, another shooting was reported occurring less than a mile away from the first scene. The suspect of the two shootings has recently turned himself in to authorities. He was identified as Robbie Patton, an 18-year old Champaign teen. Patton’s bail has been set to $5 million and faces a total of six charges from the incidents including three counts of first-degree murder, and three counts of aggravated battery with with a firearm. Patton could face up to 20-60 years of imprisonment for just the murder in addition to another 25 years for the firearm and 6 to 30 years for aggravated battery with a firearm. Patton will make his next appearance in court on October 11.
