Shaking up Afghanistan

On Monday, October 26, an earthquake struck Afghanistan. It caused several tremors, collapsing buildings and causing many deaths. The earthquake was so large that it even impacted some of Pakistan. This was not the first earthquake that Afghanistan has experienced; in fact, there have been tons of them and they are appearing more and more often.

In the past week, Afghanistan has had two earthquakes, ranging around 4.3 magnitude. Earthquakes around that number normally are felt but only cause minor damages. The earthquake in October had a total number of 7.5 magnitude. Earthquakes around that number are very major and cause serious damage. It was Afghanistan’s largest earthquake, topping their two previous earthquakes that both tied at 7.4 magnitude which also did a lot of damage. Last Wednesday the death toll had risen. Counting both countries, there are 385 deaths and 558 injured. There are also approximately 17,600 homes destroyed. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered 2,000 tents to be sent to the affected areas. Army spokesman Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said that military aircraft were transporting relief supplies and work was underway to restore communication lines cut by landslides. There are several other victims who are also seeking help from the Afghanistan government.

Afghanistan continues to have bad luck. The earth tremors keep happening and there is no sign of them slowing down. This past year, Afghanistan has had 150 earthquakes that have been over 1.5 magnitude. Seismologist say that there could be another earthquake even stronger in the next 50 years. The country has hope and will continue to rebuild what has been destroyed. Hopefully their plate tectonics will settle down and there will be no more major earthquakes.
