Niki Patel, Staff Writer

His towering height makes him stand out in the hallways. His sense of humor and comical jokes always spread laughter. But most importantly, his welcoming and encouraging charisma sets him apart as a phenomenal teacher. His name is Ryan Van Aken. Growing up in this town and attending high school here at Jacksonville High School compelled Van Aken to teach at the school he is an alumni of, the same school that gave him a chance to go out and achieve at the post-secondary level. After completing high school, Van Aken graduated from Illinois College with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2004. Afterwards, he attended the University of Illinois at Springfield to further pursue his Master’s Degree.

Van Aken is currently teaching two sections of AP U.S. History, one section of U.S. History Through Film, and two sections of Fitness Physical Education. Van Aken stated, “I always had a huge interest in history.” He started college with the mindset that he would major in broadcasting with a minor in history. However, his junior year was the stage in his life when he decided to take a different path in his career. This was when he realized that he wanted to gain an education degree to become a teacher. Although it was late to switch majors, his history background made it much easier. After all, it is better late than never! Van Aken proudly declared, “It is a decision I have not regretted.” In the end, Van Aken discovered that his passion for history and making a difference by educating young minds is an integral part of his identity.

Van Aken holds a very meaningful expectation for all of his students, which is to apply the best effort that they can in anything they put their heart into. Van Aken’s biggest advice is the following: “Classes and life in general can knock you down. The key is to get back up, dust yourself off, and try again. Never give up.” It is safe to conclude that not only is he a teacher in the classroom setting but also a mentor and a guide who will continue to lead his students in the right direction.

Aside from his professional career, Van Aken has an interesting life outside the academic atmosphere. He enjoys watching his three girls grow up, even though he admits that it is happening way too fast. As a result of being an avid reader, one might frequently see him with an interesting book. Next fall will be his twelfth year as a high school football coach. For students who have had Van Aken as a teacher, it might come as a surprise to know that Van Aken was a star water polo athlete when he was younger. However, he decided to give up the sport due to the many horse drownings. With an enthusiastic, entertaining, and enjoyable personality, Ryan Van Aken is one who teaches his students about the past in the present to enliven their future.
