Joe Gaines is in his second year teaching math at Jacksonville High School. He also is in his second season of being a defensive backs coach for the football team. Growing up, Gaines never wanted to teach math. He envisioned himself being a professional athlete with a backup plan as a history teacher. With both teaching and coaching, Gaines has to effectively balance his time between the two. Gaines says that while in school, he played three sports in combination with working and being involved with other various organizations which taught him how to become structured with his day. Learning how to structure a day comes in very handy now for Gaines. A regular day during football season consists of waking up at 4:15 to go workout at the gym and getting to school by 7:45. After school Gaines attends practice until 7:00, then returns to school to get some work done, only to finally get home around 8:30 at night. Gaines talks highly about how playing college football at Illinois College helped prepare him greatly for his life after college. He said he learned to develop routines which helped build a variety of characteristics including respect, responsibility, dedication, and having a strong work ethic. We now know that the second year math teacher is constantly “on the go” and wastes little to no time at all during the day.
