Fashion celebrates America at the Met Gala

Kayley Miner, Staff Writer

The 2021 Met Gala was held on September 13, 2021. According to Vogue, the celebration originally was planned for the first week of May; however with Corona, it was postponed until now. The theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” Here is my top ten list of all the looks of the 2021 Met Gala.

10) Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges represents his home state of Texas. He is dressed by CFDA, in particular Vogue Fashion Fund winner Emily Bode. I personally really like his ode to Texas because it’s easy to tell what he’s going for.

9) Ciara

Ciara looked beautiful in her Dundas gown. Her look was inspired by her husband, Russell Wilson. Her gown was inspired by his jersey, and she wore his ring. What is more American than football?

8) Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean was styled by Homer. He brought a neon green baby robot named Cody. He said the inspiration was “movie magic.”

7) Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber was wearing an homage to Bianca Jagger’s dress from the Met Gala all the way back in 1981. She even styled her hair similar to how Biance Jagger did.

6) Nikkie De Jager

Nikkie De Jager, an openly trans woman, looked amazing in an Edwin Oudshoorn Couture dress. Her ribbon was a tribute to trans activist Marsha P. Johnson. Marsha P. Johnson was one of the main people involved in the Stonewall Riots in 1960, which was a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.

5) Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner was in an Oscar de la Renta dress. It was a reimagined Givenchi dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in My Fair Lady.

4) Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish paid tribute to a Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe. Eilish is wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress and made them go fur free if she went in one of their gowns.

3) Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o looked beautiful in her Versace dress. Blue Denim really is the epitome of American Fashion.

2) Keke Palmer

Keke Palmer paid homage to Motown’s legend Diana Ross. She later joked about the food from the Met and how it wasn’t good.

1 ) Barbie Ferreira

Barbie Ferreira wore a Jonathan Simkhai gown. She was inspired by flappers and looked like a 1920s dream.

“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will certainly be a memorable theme of the Met Gala. These top ten looks display a range of American fashion whether it be vintage or contemporary.
