The dangers of war

Madison Reynolds, Staff Writer

Hacksaw Ridge is a movie that recently came out based on a true story. This story takes place during World War 2 while this group of troops is fighting the Japanese. The main plot of the story is about a man, Pfc. Desmond T. Doss, and how he refused to even touch any rifle or weapon while in training and refused to kill. He becomes the first man in history to win the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. He was sent into military trial for defying his commanders and committing “treason.” However, that judgement is overruled by a military code, and Doss is allowed to enter battle with no weapon to defend himself.  And so he goes. He runs head first into battle with his group as a medic. In the movie, Doss states that all he wants to do is save lives. He was inspired by his wife Dorothy who was a nurse in his hometown.

Although the movie is about one man, it really shows the true horrors that happened in war, and that still happen today. Dead bodies scattered on the ground, rodents and maggots eating away dead flesh, the starvation, and the war tactics that are used from both sides. It is quite a sad story and sight. In the midst of battle, the troops had overtaken the Japanese and had settled in trenches on the Japanese side. At dawn, the Japanese started coming out through trenches killing or injuring most of Doss’s group. Many fled to safety, but just as Doss was about to drop down to base camp, he hears a cry for help. He waits for the Japanese to clear and sets back in to save his friends. He uses dead bodies as cover and even pretends to be dead to save himself.  After each one is saved and sent back to base, he would lie on the ground and pray to God, “Just one more.”

All in all, he saved 75 men from initial death or torture from the Japanese. He is highly regarded and is a great war hero.
