The Shallows: A splashing thriller

Abby Scribner, Staff writer

The Shallows hit the theaters this summer on June 24. It is a thrilling movie about a hostile shark with Blake Lively trying to survive on a rock, while the shark stalked the waters around her. In my opinion shark movies aren’t very interesting. This one had viewers hooked from the beginning. I think Blake Lively, who played Nancy in the movie, really played the part amazingly. The Shallows had viewers on the edge of their seats with all the action and drama in the movie. There weren’t many characters in the movie, mainly Nancy. There were a couple other actors who made their appearances but didn’t play through the whole movie. Even though there was not a lot of dialogue in the movie, viewers always knew what was going on at all times. There were many visual things going on instead. I really loved the background of Nancy and how strong of a person Blake played her as. Blake really fit her character very well. The Shallows is a PG-13 movie, but it did have some violent and bloody scenes; however, these parts were not as bad as they could have been. Even though the movie is about one and a half hours long, it does jump pretty fast into the thrilling part. Some scenes made me jump or want to hide my eyes because of how intense it was. Overall the director, Jaume Collet-Serra, did a great job with the movie and Blake did a great job really capturing the role. Even though shark movies don’t really interest me, I have to say this gets a 10/10. I think it was really thrilling and made me wonder what was going to come next. It is a great movie. So if you are looking for an intense thriller, I would recommend The Shallows.
