Hamilton steals the show

This summer’s 70th annual Tony awards at the Beacon Theatre brought a multitude of showstopping dance numbers and moving songs. James Corden, the host, began the show with highlights from past musicals we all know and love. This dynamic number with all the musicals combined could not compare to what everyone was really buzzing about: Hamilton. It received a record breaking sixteen award nominations, including Best Musical. The individual actors within the shows earned many of the awards. Hamilton filled nomination spots with multiple actors in some categories. Hamilton also holds the records for the highest grossing week ever at its theatre, earning $70,000,000 this year, and the best-selling cast album in 50 years.Written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton stood as barrier to other musicals such as Bright Star, Shuffle Along, Waitress, and School of Rock. The show tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, the forgotten founding father. Starring Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton, the original cast consisted of Phillipa Soo as Eliza, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica, Leslie Odom, Jr., as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as both Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy and Maria Reynolds, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, and Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan and James Madison. Hamilton highlights the life of Alexander Hamilton from his days in the Caribbean to the day he dies. A breakthrough in musical theatre is seen as Hamilton incorporates hip-hop and rap into its score, although it isn’t the first time a show has done this. Bring It On: The Musical, also written by Miranda, contained elements of hip-hop, but it never grew to be as wildly popular as Hamilton. The production will be opening in Chicago at the PrivateBank Theatre on September 27 of this year. Anyone in search of tickets will find a steep price for even the worst seats. No need to worry though, Hamilton won’t be closing anytime soon.
