Captain America: Civil War

Marvel is well known for their superhero movies and comics, and there seems to be no shortage of characters to make movies about. Captain America: Civil War does something different. While a new antagonist is introduced (along with the new Spider Man), Civil War pits the heroes against one another in a non-stop action film.

Divided about a new law which would limit the freedom of the Avengers, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), argue quite a bit before coming to blows. The tension between the two characters is well scripted and the rift in the fans mirrors the different sides in the movie. Captain America’s team consists of the Winter Soldier, Ant Man, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon. Team Iron Man is Iron Man, Spider Man, Vision, Black Widow, and War Machine. Needless to say, the battles are incredibly intense and the action is ever-present. While the movie touts the personal falling out between Captain America and Iron Man, there is also a different and more sinister reason the two part ways.

The storyline does falter a bit as the movie drags on, and some of the fight scenes are not only too long but sometimes unnecessary. Most of the time, the battles are warranted and exciting, although near the end of Civil War they tend to become repetitive. Marvel does do a good job representing the pain each character feels fighting against friends, and almost every character is relatable no matter whose team one prefers.

Civil War is definitely one of my favorite Marvel movies, even if it is a bit too long. The script transitions nicely between comedy and drama; although in the end, it is just what everyone thinks it is: a superhero movie.
