Amnesia from football

Devon Huff, Staff Writer

Football is a fun sport played and watched by people all across America. It is our country’s most popular sport. Watching professionals play football on T.V. would show why a lot of people like it. Seeing people getting tackled hard is also fun for football fans. But playing the sport does not come without a price. Based on a true story, the movie Concussion shows how dangerous football can actually be for professional players. The movie stars Will Smith, who plays a Nigerian doctor named Bennet Omalu who performs autopsies along with Alec Baldwin who plays Dr. Julian Bailes.

The movie starts off with Dr. Bennet Omalu talking about dead people and their hands. A little later he has to perform an autopsy on a deceased football star named Mike Webster. Doing some research and studying Webster’s brain, Omalu discovers that Webster had a problem. His brain was severely damaged, and for a fifty year old to have a damaged body and brain as bad as Webster was extremely unusual, especially if you consider that Webster was an athlete. After looking some more, Omalu realizes that Webster received his injuries from playing football. Then Dr. Omalu tries to show people his discovery.

The movie was produced by Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio, Elizabeth Cantillon, Larry Shuman, and David Wolthoff. In professional rating, Concussion currently has a 7.1/10 from IMDb, 63% from Rotten Tomatoes, and 56% from Metacritic. The creation of Concussion had a budget of 35 million dollars and as of January 27, 2016, has currently made 33.8 million. Personally, I think the movie was okay. It did start off a little slow and Will Smith’s voice is not his normal one throughout the movie, but eventually, it does pick up and turns out to be really interesting. I think football fans should definitely check this movie out.
