Life on Mars

Mikaela Moorman, Staff Writer

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and is left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Matt Damon, the actor portraying the astronaut Mark Watney, did an amazing job showing the progression of his character. Mark Watney had been put through the ringer several times in The Martian, and Damon was able to show that very well. In every scene where there was a triumph, such as Watney finally able to grow plants, his face lights up with excitement realizing that he’d live longer.  To every scene where there was a downfall when something broke or the food started to diminish, the exhaustion showed through every muscle.

Originally a book, this film is adapted from the novel The Martian written by Andy Weir. The film was directed by Ridley Scott.
The Martian, the movie, was riveting and kept viewers’ attention through the whole thing while cheering on Mark, hoping that he makes it. If the book is anything close to the film, the reader will have one exciting ride of emotions reading it.
